For Finnmark standards, Alta is a lively town with a number of shops in the center. The Alta Museum has a lot of information on Alta and the Finnmark province. Right behind the museum starts a path that is around 3 km long and leads to 6000 year old rock carvings. These red-brown rock carvings show primitive figures, mostly animals. Even if one is not interested in rock carvings at all, the 3 km path is well worth the hike. In winter time, the rock carvings are usually covered with snow and ice. At the museum, they say that it is not worth to look for the carvings, as there is too much snow and ice.
