Port of Kristiansand is the only Norwegian port with ferry connections to both Sweden and England. In addition about 1.5 million passengers travel to and from Denmark by ferry each year. Every year thousands of tourists visit the local coastal area, enjoying its fjords and thousands of small islands. The Kristiansand area has more days of sunshine than any other location in Scandinavia, and the beaches and smooth rocks are ideal for sunbathing. Also Norwegians consider Kristiansand to be the number one holiday area. The river Otra, which runs practically through the city centre, is well known for its rich salmon fishing. Its water is very clean, as is the sea in and around Kristiansand. Thus the new beach, which is located in the heart of the city, is very popular. Several sightseeing/charter boats, including the M/S Maarten, are available for tourists wishing to visit the unique scenery, and the charming fishing villages with their traditional white wooden houses. Kristiansand is also a popular destination for pleasure crafts from every corner of Europe. Special yachting harbours provide berthing in areas safely separated from the commercial port.
