Located 28 km SE of Montpellier, the town of Sete is a major Mediterranean fishing port. The upper portion of the town is situated on the slopes of Mont Saint-Clair overlooking the Bassin de Thau, a breeding ground for mussels and oysters. The lower portion is intersected by a network of canals and bridges. The pedestrianized streets are lined with cafes, but the town has a more lively atmosphere, standing in contrast to other more leisurely resort destinations along the Mediterranean. For two weeks each summer the town celebrates the “joutes nautiques», a water jousting tournament dating back to the 17th century.
